Even as Thursday's deadly earthquake killed nine and injured thousands, there was yet another massive magnitude----7.0 tremblor on Saturday morning in the same region.

What's worse is that Saturday's quake hit the very same region that Thursday's magnitude----6.2 tremors--- struck.

Saturday's earthquake was found to be half a mile from Kumamoto, the capital city of the Kumamoto prefecture. This is on the island of Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan's main islands, with a population of 13 million.

The U.S. Geological Survey has documented the new earthquake. Geophysicist Doug Given said that the latest tremblor is worrying.

"No question, this is a large and very important earthquake. And it will do a lot of damage," he said.

Saturday's earthquake drew the Japan Meteorological Agency to issue a tsunami advisory to the populace in the coastal areas of Japan on the Ariake Sea and Yatsushiro Sea. This hints that a tsunami between 0.2 to 1.0 meters would also hit the areas.

But so far, there have been no recorded reports of tsunamis in these coastal areas.

Seismologists explain that the Saturday calamity  was due to the converging of a couple of tectonic plates. At present, the Philippine Sea plate is sliding under the Eurasia plate at about 2 inches per year.

Even though Thursday's magnitude----6.2 earthquake caught the Far Eastern nation by surprise, Saturday's earthquake is much more massive.  It is about 30 times more powerful than the deadly 6.2-quake striking the area a couple of days ago.

Hence, the damage to structures and lives have been considerable. Even though Japan is earthquake-prone, the Thursday and Saturday quakes have had the little, hardy nation reeling.
