As part of proceedings in a patent infringement case, Samsung has agreed to pay Apple $ 548 million in damages, according to a joint case management statement made before a California district court.

According to the statement, Samsung agreed to pay damages but said it reserves the right to reimbursement if judgment in the case is reversed or comes in its favour. Apple has disputed Samsung's assertion. Samsung said it would make the payment within 10 days of receipt of Apple's invoice. The South Korean major has however stated it does not intend to pay Apple $ 1.8 million judgment costs.

Detailing the history of the tech giants' courtroom battles, Computer World reported that Apple sued Samsung in 2011 alleging that latter infringed several of its patents. A jury in the US District Court in California decided that Samsung should pay Apple nearly $ 1 billion in damages. However, a US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit directed that Samsung pay $ 548 million.

Apple and Samsung continue to partner in business even as they battle in the court, notes CNET. The companies last year dropped all cases oversees but dispute over patents in the US is likely to stay longer, what with appeals pending and a settlement yet to be reached in the case.

The next case management conference in the matter is scheduled for December 10.
