The end of a long wait is near for fans wanting more of Sherlock, with PBS and BBC announcing the premier of the one-off Victorian special on January 1.

According to People, 'Abominable Bride' will air on New Year's Day in the US and UK. A trailer released shows what fans can expect from the episode, set in the time the character was conceived by Arthur Conan Doyle. The trailer begins with Holmes saying the 'Stage is set, curtain raises and we are about to begin'.

The trailer shows a mustachioed Watson (Martin Freeman) and Benedict Cumberbatch racing across the streets of London to solve what could probably be a murder mystery. Officially however not much has been said by the show's producers about the story.

Entertainment Weekly mentions that fan lobbying and online piracy forced the producers to clump US and UK dates.

The third season of the runway hit was broadcast in 2014. Though the January 1 Victorian episode will break a two-year drought since the third season, fans will have to wait until 2016 for the fourth series.

An encore of Abominable Bride is scheduled for January 10.
