Good news for all the people with a chronic lower back pain. If you start the physical therapy soon after the pain in your lower back begins then you may be able to relieve it faster than not doing nothing at all. However, it may not be very effective method in the long run, suggests a study in US. For the purpose of the study, the researchers examined more than 200 patients with recent case of lower back pain and randomly assigned physical therapy and no therapy at all for the next 4 weeks. Even though the group that underwent physical therapy reported significant ease by the end of third month, it did not make much difference by the end of 1st year between both the groups, reported Reuters.

Statistics say that almost as much as 70% of us will have lower back pain at some point in our lives. The study shows that even though a physical therapy may be highly effective in the short term, for long term results, it is better to let the time pass rather than jumping into invasive procedures that can do more damage than good. Researchers also say the patients may end up spending too much on healthcare costs if they spend aggressively on the treatment of back pain without helping early recovery of patients, says NPR.

Early physical therapy is a good way to induce moderate improvement as compared to no physical therapy at all. However, it is not a steady solution for the treatment of back pain. The participants did not record any improvement after the third month into the study and early physical therapy was not very effective in the long run. Also, the study suggests that the difference between improvement in back pain that comes with time and with physical therapy is not very significant, as per Web MD.
