Google to Launch Free High-Speed Wi-Fi Internet in Indian Train Stations by End of 2016

The lifeline of India, the Indian Railways spread across 67,000 miles across the country, connecting rural from the urban is about get a tech upgrade, all thanks to Google. In an announcement recently, Google said that they would provide country's 100 busiest railway stations with wi-fi connectivity by the end of 2016. Although they have massive expansion plans of 400 stations, within their first phase, they will be able to service more than 10 Million riders every day, as reported by The Verge.

This network will be available for free for passengers in the beginning. Indian Prime Minister, Modi, had visited various big tech companies including Google to help them find a solution to expand the internet connectivity. Google came with a very unique plan which will be implemented next year. To activate this plan, Google is said to work with Indian Railways and RailTel to provide the internet service to its passengers, says tech blog Tech Crunch.

Sundar Pichai, Google CEO, has promised that with their initiative they will be able to provide a much faster internet as compared to other options available across the country. The travelers will be able to stream high quality videos, do a research on their destination, download a game or read a book online. The services will be available for free initially and will grow to other stations across India in the future, reported PCMag India.

According to ET, this is one of the largest Wi-Fi projects in India and also one of the largest in the world. Google has also released an Indian map marking the stations that will get the first Wi-Fi service. To make quality content available to people within the bandwidth limitations, Google has recently launched an upgrade that helps mobile webpages load faster and YouTube is also made available offline.
