Concrete per se is bound to bring in yawns, but a weirdly thirsty version of the material is garnering tremendous wide-eyed attention. The absorbent concrete namely 'TopMix Permeable' created by Lafarge Tarmac, a building materials company, remarkably soaks up water at a tremendous rate like never seen before. The groundbreaking TopMix absorbs around 880 gallons (4000 litres) of water in a minute's time. This could stand as a viable solution for flooding and water stagnation, especially in areas prone to such problems, reports The Daily Mail.

According to The Mirror, the areas that are prone to flooding are usually residential. The ground water sometimes have no place to go and end up with overflowing drains and puddles, posing risks to common people. But with TopMix owing to its super absorbent property, it could help in soaking up the excess water and can be a key alternative to regular concrete. It could further be a cost effective approach to diminishing costs in possible flooding and water damages.

Made from permeable concrete that have been available for over 50 years and transformed to withstand the mighty weight of vehicles, TopMix could be immensely beneficial in tackling flash floods in paved urban area. It has the propensity to combat water logging and puddles on pavements, parking lots, cycle paths, sidewalks etc, states the Business Insider.

However, as amazing as it seems, there is a downside to this super concrete. The Mirror reports that apparently when the weather is cold, the water absorbed by the concrete could freeze within the material causing it to crack or self-damage.
