Los Angeles is trying to be the host city for the 2024 Olympics, and made its official bid for the games on Tuesday, according to The Wall Street Journal.

In the beginning of the year, it had been Boston over LA, Washington and San Fancisco, chosen by the U.S. Olympic Committee. Yet there was not much public and political drive in Boston to see it through.

On the other hand, the L.A. City Council gave it a thumbs up of 15-0 so that the Mayor Eric Garcetti could pursue an Olympic bid. The application will be submitted by Sept. 15.

Mayor Eric Garcetti is in Switzerland today to forward the LA bid to be the International Olympic Committee's host city for the 2024 Olympics. "We humbly seek the opportunity to return the Olympics here, for a third time in 2024, to a new Los Angeles and to a new America...We will roll out the red carpet, put on a show that only L.A. can do, for the greatest athletes on the face of the Earth," Mayor Garcetti said.

If LA manages to bag it, it would be the first time the Summer Games would be held in the U.S. since 1996, when Atlanta hosted it. LA had hosted the Summer Games in 1932 and 1984.

"Both the President and First Lady are very enthusiastic and strongly supportive of the bid put forward by the city of Los Angeles," White House spokesperson Josh Earnest said.

Therefor, LA is now the official American city candidate for the 2024 Olympics. "L.A. has the proven experience in hosting the Games and knows how to deliver world-class events for athletes and an extraordinary experience for fans...we are confident L.A. can deliver an outstanding Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2024," U.S. Olympic Committe CEO Scott Blackmun said, according to hngn.
