The gunman who opened fire in the Florida State University Library injuring three students was a former student, according to officials.

He has been identified as  31- year- old Myron May, who graduated from Florida State in 2005 and Texas Tech Law School in 2009.

He was shot dead  by the police who responded to  reports of gun fire in the FSU  within 5 minutes. He was asked to drop his gun by the officers but did not comply.

"The suspect did not comply with the commands, and actually shot at one of the officers," Tallahassee police spokesman David Northway said. "They returned fire, and the subject was killed, " reported  CNN.

Two of the three injured were hospitalised and the third person was released.

The student had some mental issue problems, reports CBS news citing New Mexico health records.

Friends say he was a budding lawyer and find it hard to believe that he took such an extreme measure, according to Fox News.

But signs were apparent that he was falling apart. May posted links on his Facebook page alleging the government was spying on him with mind reading software . He was incoherent and not making sense, according to a former girlfriend, reports Fox News.
