Cellphone retailer Carphone Warehouse has reported a hack affecting nearly 2.4 million customers.

BBC reports that credit card details alone of around 90,000 customers may have been accessed by hackers in what is being called a 'sophisticated hack' that was stopped when the company came to know about it. Customers of separately managed divisions including OneStopPhoneShop.com, e2save.com and Mobiles.co.uk, are known to be affected. Data including names, addresses, dates of birth and bank details have reportedly been compromised.

The company said that it has put in place additional security measures and has contacted customers whose profiles were hacked to inform them about measures to be taken.

According to another BBC report, the Information Commissioner's Office will look into the breach which was stopped on Wednesday.

News of the hack has unsettled customers, many of who have questioned the company's security systems. Experts have said that the data siphoned by hackers may find a ready market. The company has advised customers to notify their banks and check accounts for any suspicious activity.

Investigations into the breach will also reveal if Carphone Warehouse did enough to prevent loss of data and how it reacted after it knew about the hack that was reported on Saturday, three days after the company learnt about it.
