Dave Dombrowski's run as the general manager for the Detroit Tigers came to an end on Tuesday.

"I would like to thank Dave Dombrowski for his 14 years of service," Tigers owner Mike Ilitch announced. "Together, we've enjoyed some success, but we're still in aggressive pursuit of our ultimate goal: to bring a World Series title to Detroit and Michigan. I've decided to release Dave from his contract in order to afford him the time to pursue other opportunities. I feel this is the right time for the Tigers to move forward under new leadership."

The move was made after Dombrowski traded away star players, David Price, Yoenis Cespedes and Joakim Soria last week. Longtime assistant GM Al Avila will be taking over Dombrowski's position.

"I'm very excited for this opportunity, and honored and grateful to Mr. Ilitch for having the faith and trust in me to run the ball club in our continuing pursuit of a World Series championship," Avila, whose son, Alex Avila, is the catcher for the team, said. "I believe I'm uniquely qualified to be successful in this role in leading the organization. We're confident we can make a strong push to win this year, and that we have the foundation in place to win next year and for years to come."

Dombrowski, who is one of the most successful GMs in the league, can expect a lot of offers from other teams.

One potential team that Dombrowski could be headed for is the Boston Red Sox, who has been struggling over the past few years. Red Sox president Larry Lucchino stated last week that he would be resigning after this season. Dombrowski could also be courted by the Toronto Blue Jays, who are also looking for a president after Paul Beeston announced that he would be stepping down from the post at the end of the season.

"He's [Dombrowski] going to do the same thing he's always done,'' said Mike Russell, Arizona Diamondbacks special assistant to baseball operations. "He's going to take the challenge, wherever it is, and make them better. You look at what he did in Detroit. He took that team from the bottom up, made everyone better, and had them winning year after year.''

Other teams that Dombrowski could be headed to include the Los Angeles Angels, Seattle Mariners, Cincinnati Reds, Milwaukee Bucks and the Baltimore Orioles, who are all rumored to be making GM changes. Dombrowski also has ties to Tony La Russa with the Diamondbacks and Jerry Reinsdorf of the Chicago White Sox.
