Could 'General Hospital' fans see Luke Spencer once again?

According to the latest casting rumors, Anthony Geary, who has played Spencer since 1978, said that he is "not completely opposed to returning." However, his return will dependent on several conditions.

"If the story if interesting to me and it works out, I may come back to the show for six weeks or so," the 68-year-old daytime actor said to Entertainment Weekly. "It depends on the writers and how far they want to look. We had just been repeating ourselves for a while. I had become a dad, a grandfather. There was no way I was going to stick around to become just another guy. If they come up with something, a twist, I would come for it."

Executive producer Frank Valentini stated in response to Geary's comments that his fans were "devastated" when he left the show.

"It's not a question of him being able to stay or come back. It just has to be a good enough, solid to bring [him back]," Valentini said.

Even though fans might want Geary back on the show, the actor acknowledged the fact that his comments in regards to the show's plots and script might anger some of the writers. He also noted that there could be too many variables in the future, which could make a return difficult to write in.

In the meantime, Geary will be heading to Holland where he will depart from the Spencer character.

"I realized that returning to this character was going to become my career. I learned that after all the attention I got playing the role, there weren't going to be a lot of offers coming in. I was so associated with this guy. So I made the conscious decision to find another place in the world where I could spend time with people who didn't know me," he explained. "In Holland, the show has never ran. The Dutch have no interest in celebrity. I just love it there."

Geary added, however, that he is not sick of playing Luke. In Holland, Geary plans on working in musical theater.

A new episode of "General Hospital" will be airing today, July 31 at 2:00 p.m. ET on ABC.
