Mexican authorities announced on Sunday, July 12, that the leader of the Sinaloa cartel, Mexico's most infamous drug lord Joaquin Guzman, also known as "El Chapo" managed to stage a prison break, again!

Guzman was arrested in early 2014, and had been serving his sentence in a maximum-security prison, 56 miles away from the nation's capital. Security cameras last spotted Guzman Saturday night when he was headed for the shower area. Since then, he was nowhere to be found, including his cell, and a manhunt was launched, The Guardian reported.

Guzman, who started out as a mid-level drug dealer, had previously been on the run for more than 12 years before he was finally captured. However, authorities searching for him and making it to the most-wanted list of the US Drug Enforcement Administration did not slow down his ascent to the top of the drug game. By the time he was arrested he had become one of the biggest drug lords in the world, with a whooping estimated wealth of $1 billion. Even Forbes magazine acknowledged his power and ranked him above French and Venezuelan presidents on its list of "The Most Powerful People," The Guardian reported. Guzman is said to be the head of the cartel that now controls cross-border drug trafficking between United States and Mexico.

In 2001, Guzman had escaped from another maximum-security prison with the assistance of correctional officers. During his long years on the run, up until his arrest, he had built a reputation for being able to pay off civilians and even public officials to avoid getting arrested.

Authorities told reporters that Guzman used a tunnel that was built inside the prison to escape, a testament to his power and influence.
