Ben Affleck, the 42-year-old Oscar winner and Jennifer Garner, the 43-year-old actress, announced their divorce on Tuesday. "After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce," the former lovebirds said to E! News. "We go forward with love and friendship for one another and a commitment to co-parenting our children whose privacy we ask to be respected during this difficult time."

Surprisingly, just yesterday, the couple had celebrated its 10th wedding anniversary, although the grapevine whispered that they had been living apart and staying in hotels for almost 10 months "as part of a trial separation".

The rumours had been strong, and a mobile truck had even been seen at their Brentwood home many days ago, starting rumors of a possible divorce. Earlier, in May, the couple had come together in public, although the buzz of their separation was strong.

Strangely, after Affleck got an Oscar in 2013, with an award for 'Argo', he defended his acceptance speech, calling his marriage "work." "I want to thank my wife...for working on our marriage for 10 Christmases. It is work, but it's the best kind of work. And there's no one I'd rather work with," he said two years ago on stage.

Last year, in September the Gone Girl actor slammed tabloids who questioned his marriage. "See, that's tabloid s--t. That's all bulls--t," Affleck told Details. "They completely lie. I mean, I can show you 10 articles of Star and OK!-those magazines feel totally comfortable absolutely fictionalizing every single element of the story. And there's nothing you can do about that. My only hope is that people with any common sense recognize that those stories are false. And, I don't know, there're worse stories..."

They have three children together: Violet, 9, Seraphina, 6, and Samuel, 3.
