Comedian and actress, Amy Schumer, has spoken out against the critics who called her material insensitive and racist.

The 34-year-old comedian was recently criticized in an article published in the U.K's Guardian, written by Monia Heisey. In the piece, Heisey stated that Schumer's performance as the host of the MTV Movie Awards was "lackluster." She added that the stint "featured lazy jokes about Latina women being 'crazy' that left Jennifer Lopez as unimpressed as the online commentariat."

Schumer then posted a lengthy tweet that explained her thought process when it comes to creating comedy. She did not, however, state that her response was linked to Heisey's criticisms.

The tweet read: "I am a comic. I am so glad more people are laughing at me and with me all of a sudden. I will joke about things you like, and I will joke about things you aren't comfortable with. And that's ok. Stick with me and trust I am joking. I go in and out of playing an irreverent idiot. That includes making dumb jokes about race...You can call it a 'blind spot for racism' or 'lazy' but you are wrong. It is a joke and it is funny I know that because people laugh at it. Even if you personally did not. I am not going to start joking about safe material."

Schumer ended the message, stating "I am not a racist. I am a devout feminist and lover of all people. My fight is for all people to be treated equally."

Schumer can be seen in "Trainwreck," which will be released in theaters on July 17.

The comic revealed that she turned down the offer to replace Jon Stewart on "The Daily Show."

She said, "I was so honored to be asked and considered....I thought, 'Well, I could give everyone I love a job and we could all be together for five years.' But picturing being in a building and knowing what I was going to do for five years-I love not knowing. And I've never done anything safe or to make money for that reason. So, you know, I said, 'I can't start now.'"

Schumer is also the star of "Inside Amy Schumer."
