The court decided to charge the Florida man for attempted second-degree murder for shooting at George Zimmerman, the New York Daily News reported.

The incident took place May 11 in Florida where suspect Matthew Apperson fired shots into Zimmerman's car. Apperson already had two counts of charges from his previous actions; one aggravated battery with a deadly weapon charge and one aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge. Apperson is also said to have spent some time in a mental institution previously.

The authorities gave a statement about the charges and said it is law enforcement's and the State Attorney's Office's duty to provide safe streets for every resident and visitor of Seminole County, where the shooting incident took place.

Apperson's lawyer said that he is not surprised by prosecutors "overreach with the heaviest charges" and called it "a normal day at the office." Apperson is reported to plead guilty to the charges and has now been released on $35,000 bond.

According to Zimmerman, the two had a conflict in traffic before the incident, and when they ran into each other a second time, Apperson tailgated Zimmerman and cursed. After a brief exchange of insults Apperson allegedly fired into Zimmerman's car and then ran away from the scene.

The public forst became acquinted with George Zimmerman's name in 2013 when the then neighborhood watchman Zimmerman followed and shot Trayvon Martin, killing him. Martin was a black teenager who was unarmed when he was killed.

Zimmerman was freed under the controversial "stand your ground" law of the Florida state which sparked public unrest and protests.
