Apple has acquired a German augmented reality firm Metaio, whose technology has been used by Macy's, BMW and furniture retailer Ikea.

As usual, Apple did not comment on the future plans and responded with a classic statement.

"Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans," the company said in an email message.

Augmented reality (AR) might be the next step in the user interfaces, an area where Apple has always led. Systems with AR add information to a user's view of the world to help them do things like work, shop or drive.

Some of the rivalries including Google have already started to explore the area. The search giant is reportedly working on a redesigned version of Google Glass. Microsoft has also released details about its HoloLens concept, however it has no shipping date yet.
