The debate around the safety of e-cigarettes not withstanding, around half a million people took to vaping last year in Britain.

According to Inquisitr, there are 2.6 million people in Britain who use e-cigarettes as against 2.1 million at the beginning of 2014. The numbers were obtained from Action on Smoking and Health Organization (ASH), which interestingly also expressed concerns that increasing number of people see e-cigarettes just as harmful as traditional cigarettes.

"The number of ex-smokers who are staying off tobacco by using electronic cigarettes is growing, showing just what value they can have. But the number of people who wrongly believe that vaping is as harmful as smoking is worrying," chief executive at ASH, Deborah Arnott said.

"The growth of this false perception risks discouraging many smokers from using electronic cigarettes to quit and keep them smoking instead which would be bad for their health and the health of those around them."

Studies have shown in the past that chemicals like formaldehyde in liquid flavors used in e-cigs can be just as harmful as traditional cigarettes.
