At least one of the officers charged for the illegal arrested and eventual death of Freddie Gray has a history of run ins with the law.

NBC News reports that 41-year-old Lt. Brian Rice, one of of the three officers who made eye contact and pursued Gray, had his guns taken away from him after he made a series of threatening comments.

Rice's guns were taken away in 2012. At that time, it appears Rice and the mother of his child, Karyn Crisafulli, had been having a difficult time with their relationship. Their child was six months old at the time.

The trouble began when Rice asked Crisafulli to bring their child to Rice's home for the weekend. Crisafulli did not fulfill this request, causing Rice to say that he would do something to himself in his home's laundry room. The exact nature of the threat has been classified in court documents. He also made a statement that intimated suicidal intentions.

Officers who responded to the scene asked Rice if he had any weapons, and after initially lying to the officers, Rice admitted he did have a number of weapons upon further questioning. At that point, the responding officers seized Rice's arsenal which included a .40 caliber pistol, an AK-47 style rifle, a .22 caliber rifle, and two shotguns.

It is unknown if and when Rice had these weapons returned to him. Again in 2012, Rice had another run-in with the law when he pulled a gun on Crisafulli's boyfriend at the time.

Rice faces a number of charges in the death of Freddie Gray including involuntary manslaughter, assault, and misconduct in office stemming from the fact that Gray was arrested illegally.
