"Gone Girl", the Ben Affleck-starring thriller movie overtook the horror flick "Annabelle" at the weekend box office debuting at $38 million.

Weekend numbers crunched by tracking firm Rentrak revealed that in a "tight race" for the lead spot, John R. Leonetti's demonic doll couldn't posess the box office this weekend and grossed in $37.2 million.

"It was virtually a photo finish," Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for box-office at Rentrak told Fox News.

"These two movies couldn't be more different. It shows how if the marketplace presents a diversity of product, audiences will come out. It's the third and fourth $30 million debut of the past two weeks. It's been a great post-summer run," he added.
