Germanwings co-pilot Andreas Lubitz told his girlfriend that he was undergoing psychiatric treatment and according to one report, he split with her just a day before the crash.

His girlfriend Maria W (full name withheld) while speaking to the Bild newspaper said, "When I heard about the crash, I remembered a sentence, over and over again, that he said."

"'One day I'll do something that will change the system, and then everyone will know my name and remember it'."

"I didn't know what he meant by that at the time, but now it's obvious," she said.

She added "He did it because he realised that, due to his health problems, his big dream of working at Lufthansa, of a having job as a pilot, and as a pilot on long-distance flights, was nearly impossible."

"He never talked much about his illness, only that he was in psychiatric treatment."

Maria also said that Lubitz would often wake up in the middle of night after suffering from nightmares screaming "We're going down!"

Investigative authorities also found evidence where Lubitz had been signed off sick by 2 doctors including the day on which the crash happened. The budget airline however maintained that the co-pilot has not submitted any sick note at that time.

Lufthansa and its subsidiary, have been under enormous pressure after claiming Lubitz had been declared 100 percent fit to fly.

Maria W. also said, "We always talked a lot about work and then he became a different person. He became upset about the conditions we worked under: too little money, fear of losing the contract, too much pressure."

Officials from Lufthansa have so far declined to comment on the issue.
