"Insurgent," the anticipated sequel to Lionsgate's YA "Divergent," brought in $4.1 million on Thursday night in domestic theaters. In the international box office, the movie has made $8.2 million so far. Lionsgate announced that "Insurgent" was number one in 49 out of the 52 global markets where it has opened so far.

The movie, starring Shailene Woodley and Theo James, did not perform better than "Divergent," which brought in $4.9 million on its opening night.

Despite the slower start, "Insurgent" is projected to make more than "Divergent," bringing in anywhere between $55 and $60 million during its opening weekend. The movie will expand to 3,875 locations throughout the U.S. and it will open in most of the international markets as well. "Divergent" made $54.6 million during its debut weekend.

"Insurgent" is expected to take the number one spot from Disney's live-action "Cinderella," which opened to $70.1 million last weekend according to EW.

"Insurgent," based on the second book in Veronica Roth's three-book series, follows the journey of a young woman, Tris' (Woodley) journey after she fails to fit into one of the five factions within the community and becomes a threat to the stability of the community. The last book, "Allegiant," will be filmed in two parts.

Other stars include Kate Winslet, Ansel Elgort, Miles Teller, Octavia Spencer and Naomi Watts. The movie, which cost $110 million to make - $25 million more than "Divergent" - was directed by Robert Schwentke and produced by Lucy Fisher, Douglas Wick and Pouya Shahbazian.

Other openings this weekend include R-rated action-thriller, "The Gunman," starring Sean Penn and "Do You Believe?"
