Is Lakers star Kobe Bryant still making a push for Rajon Rondo?

The latest rumors are claiming that even though Rondo has a new team, Bryant is still trying to convince the point guard to come to Los Angeles. During Sunday (March 8) night's game between the Dallas Mavericks and the Lakers, an injured Bryant made an appearance on the bench, which led many to believe that he was there to recruit Rondo, who will become an unrestricted free agent in July.

When Rondo was traded to the Mavericks, many assumed that the guard and the team would have a verbal agreement about a contract extension once Rondo hits the free agent market. Rondo has also stated that he would consider all options, including the Mavericks, in the offseason.

Regardless of any oral promises made, Rondo could still pack up his bags for a new team, especially since he and Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle have not been seeing things eye-to-eye. Last month, Rondo and Carlisle engaged in a shouting match near the bench due to differences in playmaking. Rondo was subsequently suspended for one game.

"I'm misunderstood in general," Rondo had said in response to claims that he wanted out of Dallas. "I don't mind because I'm very quiet and I stay to myself. People are going to say what they want to say. I don't talk, so I don't know why they would say that. I don't think I play as if I don't want to be here."

Despite the yelling match, Rondo is focused on helping his team get to the playoffs. When he was asked about playing with Bryant and the Lakers, he told ESPN.com, "He's one of the best that's ever played our game. When he speaks, it speaks volumes. It's an honor and a compliment that he'd want to play with a guy like me. But right now I'm focused on winning a championship with the Dallas Mavericks."

Despite Rondo's focus on winning a championship, Bryant has stated that he will not stop trying to recruit Rondo. When asked if he was deterred after Rondo was traded from the Boston Celtics to the Mavericks, Bryant said, "No way."

He added back in January, "I'm not done. I'm not stopping until he signs an extension."

Rondo, 29, is averaging 8.8 points with 8.0 assists and 5.8 rebounds this season. Bryant, 36, is expected to retire after next season.
