Rewriting the norm, a new study shows that average penis size is not as big as was previously thought.

While no studies in the past have defined averages, a sub six-inch male organ was termed small which dented confidence of many men, bringing anxiety and depression. Promising relief to such men, the study shows that the average size for an erect penis is 5.17 inches and 3.6 inches flaccid length, reports The Telegraph.

The study is expected to help healthcare professionals in better counselling of men who suffer from dysmorphic syndrome or other conditions caused due to a misplaced perception of size.

"Penis size nomograms may be useful in clinical and therapeutic settings to counsel men and for academic research," researchers wrote in the journal BJU International.

The study was based on 17 other studies which involved 15,000 men who had their organs measured by health professionals. The research also revealed average girths of 3.67 inches when flaccid and 4.59 inches when erect, reports CBC News.

The new study does not suggest any age related difference in size and also does not distinguish between different populations. Researchers have recommended that men who want to be reassured or diagnose latent problems should approach healthcare professionals to get themselves measured.
